Espers who have mutations like “Beguiling” and “Domination” are slavers in a nutshell, they can dispose of the life of every sentient soul of this vast world for their own benefit, they destroy the will power of their victim, regardless if it’s a giant desert spicey-worm or an innocent peasant who grows watervine, and this tyranny will often end with the death of this empty shell. Right from the beginning, this game teaches us that the existence of our character is going to be difficult, ethically, morally and physically. I realized that's why I enjoy Caves Of Qud so much: even if the game has a pretty positive thinking about beauty of nature, humanism, and the fact that life (uuuh) always finds a way, all this background is braided with tragedy, in a more or less subtle form. We know that the universe is vast, cold and unfair it ignore sentience, it ignore morale values, it ignore compassion. Our cynicism about happy-ending stories. Our empathy for the suffering characters, cursed by fate, struggling in the entropy of the mind and of the flesh to improve their condition, often in vain. I have to say that I love good fiction tragedies, because they strike a chord (two chords, in fact) : Traditionally, the intention of tragedy is to invoke an accompanying catharsis, or a "pain awakens pleasure", for the audience.
